Victory Church exists to be a Community of God’s People who Celebrate God’s Presence and Communicate God’s Purpose.

The Community of God’s People: Believing that whatever else the New Testament Church is, it is a “Called out Community of Faith.” With this in mind we desire to develop an atmosphere in which people are motivated in life because of love. We desire to create a fellowship whereby people are cared for in a uniquely personal way; a fellowship of believers who can learn about God together; and a fellowship of believers who will serve God together.

The Celebration of God’s Presence: Believing that God is the sole Person worthy to receive worship, we celebrate His Reality in our lives through music, giving, and lifestyle.

The Communication of God’s Purpose: Believing that it is God’s will that none “should perish but that all should come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9), Christ’s last command to be witnesses (Acts 1:8) is a primary concern. We desire to reach out into the community and world with the Good News of salvation that comes through Jesus Christ.

Victory Congregational Methodist Church was officially organized on Wednesday night, April 11, 1973, with 21 adults signing the charter. This charter was left open for charter membership until July, 1973.

The church originally met in the Chapel of Wesley College, which was then Westminster College. The church purchased 3 ½ acres of land in 1974 and built a church building which was dedicated on September 6, 1975.

One method of fund raising for the new building was a gospel recording by Patsy Gilmore entitled, “Patsy Sings More about Jesus.” The ladies of the church sold various crafts to raise funds and members of the church did much of the work on the church building. Frank Gilmore was elected as the first Church Lay Leader and has served as church leader since the church’s organization. Other charter officers included Barbara McBride, Church Secretary; Delores Feazell, Christian Education Director; Ovee Cornell, Sunday School Superintendent; and Mike Quayle, Visitation Leader.

Rev. Ted Mangum served as the church’s first pastor with his wife Patricia, and daughters, Rhoda & Heidi. Rev. Mangum served from 1973 until 1978. Other pastors that have served at Victory Church are: Rev. Jimmy Landrum (wife Laura) from 1978 until 1980; Rev. Bobby Roberson (wife Terrye) from 1981 until 1983; Rev. Elmo McGuire (wife Joyce) from 1983 until 1990 and again from 1992 until 1994; Rev. Roman Miller (wife Una) from 1990 until 1991; Rev. Mark McPherson (wife Jennifer) from 1991 until 1992; Rev. Douglas Feazell (wife Delores) from 1995 until 1999. Currently, Rev. Cregg Puckett (wife Melissa) serves as the full-time pastor since 1999.

The church building has been flooded at least three times, the first being the Easter Flood of 1979 and the third flood in 1994. Church minutes reflect that the members were too busy in December of 1982 and January of 1983 to conduct a church conference because of the need to rebuild from a flood. The minutes recorded reflect the Character & Commitment of these believers as they worked together in overcoming great obstacles in maintaining ministry to the community of Florence.
