April / May Photos
I haven't said much about my job in the computer labs, but I guess that is
because things have run very smoothly most of the time. Most of the time
until April 26, that is. On that day we had a server crash...the server
which stores all of the student data such as homework they are working on.
Being in Africa makes such an event a little more challenging since the
nearest location that we could use to service our downed server is located in
Germany! Well, we spent two days diagnosing the problem with the server
before officially declaring it dead, and another two day talking with the
manufacturer to find out that it is still under warranty. Two weeks later
we are still waiting for them to send us a new server.
Meanwhile, the students, which by the way have handled all this confusion
really well, were unable to access their files. I was constantly having to
restore backups to a location that they could access (thank goodness for
backups). We finally gave them access to all of their backed up data,
which made them very happy, to say the least.
It is my job to maintain all the servers (5 total), and the computer labs and
classroom (4 total).

There is a computer class every period of the school day. 7th, 8th, and
9th graders get basic use classes (windows, office, internet, email, etc.).
Upper classmen can choose from serveral classes to take, including web design,
computer information technology business (this course covers graphic arts,
design, programming, database, history, and other things), and AP computer
(mostly java programming).
