This term break has been busy in many ways. Following school, we had a
conference for International Christian Schools. It was a very good conference,
and included keynote speakers, Dr. Kathy Kock, and Dr. Ron Cline. Following the
conference, our family had a little time to get away, so we took a five day trip
to the coast. We drove most of the way on paved highway (The EU and Chinese
embassies have made some really nice road between Nairobi and Mombasa). However,
in Mariakani, we turned off on dirt roads, to avoid going through Mombasa. The
short cut from Mariakani to Kilifi was very cool, if you like dirt roads, and
beautiful. At Turtle Bay, which is at Watamu beach, we did lots of swimming,
body surfing, snorkeling on the reef (that was very amazing), feeding moray eels
in the tidal pools, and just plain had a blast. Abby got a minor jelly fish
sting; Karissa got a bee sting next to her eye, and Elizabeth chipped three
teeth when a wave slammed her into a rock. On the return trip, we drove through
Mombasa, got a little confused, and ended up crossing the ferry heading south,
thinking we were headed to Nairobi. We soon figured out we were going the wrong
way, and took another shortcut, from Tiwi to Mariakani. This was almost all dirt
road, and even more beautiful that the other dirt road. This road goes next to
the Shimba Hills national park which is one of the largest tropical rain forests
in Kenya. Overall we had a very good trip.
